Bowman to make NASCAR Cup return a month after fracture

    [ad_1]

Bowman was sidelined about a month ago after suffering a compression fracture when he collided with another vehicle, rolling multiple times in a sprint car crash at 34 Raceway in Iowa.

He has missed three points-paying events and the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro while he recovered.

“It’s a boost for all of us to have Alex return to the #48 car this weekend at our home track,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports.

“He’s still 17th in points, which says a lot about how well the team performed at the start of the year. Alex has worked hard to rehab the injury and come back strong, and I look for him to continue having a championship-caliber season.”

Josh Berry, who previously subbed for an injured Chase Elliott earlier this year, was behind the wheel of the #48 car this past month, with finishes of 10th, 25th, and 30th.

He also made the All-Star Race after winning the Open. Berry is a regular in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving full-time for JR Motorsports.

Bowman has been granted a medical waiver by NASCAR and remains eligible for the championship playoffs. He is 17th, just five points outside the playoffs right now. He finished 10th in last year’s Coke 600.

NASCAR makes chassis changes following Larson/Preece crash

NASCAR has made two updates to the chassis following its investigation of the Talladega crash involving Kyle Larson and Ryan Preece.

After spinning, Larson’s car shot back up the track into the path of Preece, who made direct contact with the passenger-side door of the car.

The violent impact caused significant damage to the side of Larson’s car, and a door bar inside the cockpit could be seen pushed upwards and twisted after the crash.

NASCAR took both the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and the #41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford back to the R&D Center to investigate.

Both Larson and Preece were uninjured in the crash, but Preece said it was “definitely one of the hardest hits I’ve ever taken in my racing career.”

NASCAR has now made changes to the right side door bar gussets, while the front clip V-brace must be removed from the assembly. These updates are effective immediate.

In a memo sent to the race teams, NASCAR made it clear that further updates are being considered. The sanctioning body will be performing two days of of crash tests this week at a facility in Ohio.

  • Ford To Adopt No-Haggle EV Pricing In January 2024

Ford To Adopt No-Haggle EV Pricing In January 2024

    [ad_1]

During Ford’s Capital Markets Day presentation, company CEO Jim Farley announced the automaker was going to transition to set, non-negotiated prices for its electric vehicles.

“We’re matching these vehicles with a modern and simple customer experience that starts with one major breakthrough, non-negotiable price. Our dealers can be a competitive advantage as we work together to lower distribution costs. We’re going to reduce physical inventories dramatically in Model e, and deploy a new marketing model that focuses on loyalty and customer communication and building a community rather than spending billions on TV advertising and broadcast media,” Farley said.

Doug Field, Ford’s chief advanced product development and technology officer, offered some more details about the new pricing strategy. It will take effect in January 2024 for the automaker’s EVs.

“Model E customers will have flexible purchase options, online, in the store, with transparent pricing that they don’t have to haggle over, and remote vehicle delivery, and later pick up as well. These better experiences make customers more likely to build a relationship and choose the same dealer again,” Field said.

Ford will also establish new retail replenishment centers. These sites will hold a couple of weeks of vehicle inventory and will be able to deliver a model to a customer in less than 10 days.

The company made the non-negotiable pricing a pillar of creating its new Model e dealer network. Showrooms have to post set prices for EVs on the automaker’s website, and customers can complete the purchase online.

However, this does not mean Ford is adopting a direct sales model like what Tesla or Rivian use. Customers are still buying from a dealer but don’t have to enter a showroom if they don’t want to.

In December 2022, Farley said that 1,920 of the automaker’s 2,968 dealers in the United States agreed to become a Model-e-certified location for selling the brand’s EVs. These showrooms have to put employees through electric-vehicle-specific training, install chargers, and offer complimentary vehicle pickup and dropoff.

Motor1.com reached out to InsideEVs Senior Editor Tom Moloughney for his analysis of Ford’s pricing plan:

“Ford’s approach is a clever workaround to dealer franchise laws to offer what many consumers today want; a non-negotiable set price with the option of home delivery. Tesla has proven this formula works and is often preferred over the existing car buying experience that can consist of many hours at the dealership to negotiate a deal before it gets approved by a floor manager, only to get turned over to the finance department where you’re offered everything from undercoating, window etching and wheel insurance, to an extended warranty.

“Model e’s approach will be to allow customers that want to eliminate all that to do so with online pricing that the dealers set individually, while still offering the dealership experience that some buyers prefer.”

GM, Samsung win tax breaks for proposed $3.5B battery plant in Indiana

    [ad_1]

General Motors appears to be moving forward with a plan to build an electric vehicle battery plant in northern Indiana.

The automaker has proposed spending $3.5 billion on what would be its fourth U.S. battery plant, according to government officials. The project outside New Carlisle, Ind., would have roughly 1,600 full-time employees by the end of 2027, at an average wage of $24 per hour, according to a development agreement filed with St. Joseph County.

County officials on Tuesday approved a development agreement and tax abatement with GM for the project. It amends an earlier agreement approved last year between the county and Ultium Cells LLC, the name of GM’s joint venture with LG Energy Solution. Talks with LG broke down over a fourth battery plant that would follow three in operation or under construction in the U.S.

GM in April formed a joint venture with South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI and said the two companies planned to invest more than $3 billion to open a plant by 2026.

A GM spokesperson said the automaker has not yet decided on a location.

“Samsung SDI and General Motors are developing a competitive business case for a battery cell manufacturing plant that could be located in New Carlisle, Ind.,” GM said in a statement. “As part of that work, we submitted a tax abatement application with St. Joseph County, which was approved [Tuesday]. We appreciate the local support as the joint venture works to make a location decision.”

GM and Samsung said their plant will produce prismatic and cylindrical battery cells, which will give GM additional form factors for its upcoming EVs. The automaker said it expects to have roughly 160 gigawatt-hours of battery cell capacity in the U.S. when the plant reaches full production.

Construction of the Indiana facility — two buildings totaling 3 million square feet — would begin in the fourth quarter and finish by the end of 2027, according to the development agreement.

St. Joseph County offered to eliminate GM’s real property taxes for 10 years and personal property taxes for 15 years, though the company would pay $4.5 million annually for a decade toward infrastructure costs, according to the county.

GM has invested more than $7 billion in three Ultium Cells battery plants. The first, in Warren, Ohio, has begun production. A second plant in Spring Hill, Tenn., is expected to open this year, while a third near Lansing, Mich., is expected to open in 2024.

  • 2024 Honda Pilot Review: Prices, Specs, and Photos

2024 Honda Pilot Review: Prices, Specs, and Photos

    [ad_1]

What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Honda Pilot? What does it compare to?

The 2024 Honda Pilot is a three-row crossover SUV with a big interior and decent V-6 power. Shop it against the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, and Kia Telluride.

Is the 2024 Honda Pilot a good SUV?

Big and reasonably stylish for a three-row crossover SUV, the 2024 Pilot makes a solid case for itself. Middling fuel economy and some quirky tech hold it back against the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, though the 2023 Pilot netted a solid 6.6 out of 10. We’ll update this score once official information becomes available. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

What’s new for the 2024 Honda Pilot?

We expect no major changes for 2024. The Pilot was revamped for 2023 with blockier styling, an off-road-ish trim level, and a muscular V-6 engine.

Its blunt front end gives way to a side profile that looks like an updated version of some 1990s classics. The available TrailSport trim delivers a hint of off-road utility with its higher stance, real skid plates, and recovery points.

Inside, most versions come with a 9.0-inch touchscreen that juts out of an otherwise simple, contemporary dashboard.

The Pilot makes use of a smooth 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 285 hp, which clicks its way through 10 gears to either the front or, optionally, all four wheels. The gearbox works silently in the background to make the most of all that power, but the Pilot will beg for fuel-station stops. Look for just 21 mpg combined for most models with all-wheel drive. The TrailSport’s slightly lifted suspension nudges that down by another mpg. Honda doesn’t currently offer a Pilot hybrid.

A calm, comfortable ride with standard 18-inch wheels changes only slightly with the bigger 20s fitted to higher-trim versions. The TrailSport can be a bit bouncy with its off-road tires. It’s definitely more capable in the rough than other versions, but we question how many owners will venture beyond a grass parking lot.

More importantly, the cabin swallows up as many as eight passengers is solid comfort. It’s not quite as spacious as Honda’s own Odyssey van, but it comes close. Second-row captain’s chairs are widely available.

Crash tests have yet to be performed on the latest Pilot. Look for the expected array of driver-assistance tech, including adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and a driver-attention monitor. Blind-spot monitors come on all but the lowest trims.

How much does the 2024 Honda Pilot cost?

Figure around $37,500 to start in base LX trim, which is a bit spartan with its unheated cloth seats and dinky 7.0-inch touchscreen. The Sport tosses in rear-seat climate controls and butt warmers up front for a hefty $3,000 more, at which point you might as well drop another three grand for the EX-L with its leather trim, 9.0-inch display, and power tailgate.

Where is the 2024 Honda Pilot made?

    In Lincoln, Alabama.

  • BMW electrifies 5 Series with powerful i5 electric sedan

BMW electrifies 5 Series with powerful i5 electric sedan

    [ad_1]

BMW will roll out at least four variants of the all-electric i5 midsize sedan as it expands drivetrains as part of a redesign of the eighth-generation 5 Series family.

The i5, which will compete against luxury battery-electric cars including the Mercedes EQE, was unveiled Wednesday along with a combustion engine sibling, the 2024 5 Series sedan.

The retooled sedan is 3.4 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider and 1.4 inches taller than the outgoing model, with a wheelbase increased by 0.8 inches to 117.9 inches, helping to improve seating comfort, notably in the rear, BMW said.

The battery-electric i5 variants will be:

    • The i5 M60 xDrive sedan, which will become the flagship 5 Series model with 590 hp and a 0-to-60 mph acceleration time of 3.7 seconds and 256 miles of range.
    • The entry i5 eDrive40 rear-wheel-drive sedan, with 335 hp and 295 miles of range.
    • An i5 station wagon to be sold in Europe.
    • An all-wheel-drive i5 sedan model that will launch in 2024.

The retooled 5 Series and new i5 sedan, assembled in Dingolfing, Germany, will go on sale globally in October, BMW said.

The 5 series, dating to 1972, is a core model in BMW’s U.S. car lineup. It was the No. 2 seller, after the Lexus ES, among luxury midsize cars in 2022, with sales of 20,859, down 15 percent.

The 2024 i5 has an 84.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a driving range of 296 to 361 miles under Europe’s WLTP testing regime.

The charging unit in the i5 enables Level 2 AC charging up to 11 kW. When connected to a DC fast charger, the charging rate of 205 kW allows the i5 battery to be topped off to 80 percent from 10 percent in about 30 minutes. BMW said first-time owners of the i5 will receive two years of complimentary 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America DC fast-charging locations.

The i5’s range can be also moderated by activating a new drive system function, what BMW is calling Max Range, to help alleviate range anxiety. When the car is in Max Range mode, drive power and top speed are restricted and comfort functions are adjusted to conserve battery power.

The spokesperson also declined to provide pricing for Night Series vehicles, noting that the cost will differ depending on the market and the customer’s choices for personalization. By comparison, Black Badge Rolls-Royces command a premium of roughly $45,000 over standard models, according to the company.

In an emailed statement, Gorden Wagener, the chief design officer of Mercedes-Benz, characterized the options as offering “a playful sense of rebellion” compared to what you might typically see in a brand such as Maybach, which had been seen by some as becoming bland.

Mercedes has introduced various Maybach models off and on since the Maybach 52 and Maybach 62 in 2002, but the automaker worked hardest in recent years to permanently rejuvenate the 114-year-old marque.

In 2022, Mercedes-Maybach introduced the two-tone, 18-foot (5,486mm) long S680 sedan developed by Virgil Abloh, the late head of menswear for Louis Vuitton, to much fanfare and critical acclaim.

A Mercedes-Maybach “Haute Voiture” (a play on “haute couture”) sports bouclé door panels that look like they could have come out of the Chanel atelier. The vehicle has recently started production, and all 150 units are spoken for.

  • Fiat 600 small crossover photos leaked online

Fiat 600 small crossover photos leaked online

    [ad_1]

The 600 will be the first Fiat model on a Stellantis platform after the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler that formed the group in 2021.

The 600 is expected to go on sale by year-end, with a potential unveiling on July 4, according to reports in the Italian news media.

A Stellantis representative declined to comment.

Fiat has used the 600 name for two series of small cars, dating back to the rear-engine replacement for the Topolino in 1955. That version of the 600 was in production until the late 1960s, with variants that included the Multipla ultra-mini van. A second generation was launched in the late 1990s as the Seicento (Italian for 600) minicar and later renamed the 600.

The Fiat 600 will be assembled in Poland at the former FCA Tychy plant, alongside the Jeep Avenger, which was unveiled last October and for which deliveries started in April in Italy.

The e-CMP platform supports gasoline, diesel and full-electric powertrains. The Jeep Avenger is only sold as a battery electric car in most European markets, with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine offered only in Italy, Poland and Spain. The Fiat 600 is expected to  follow the same pattern.

A small Alfa Romeo crossover on the same platform will also be unveiled by the end of 2023 and be on sale in 2024. It will also be assembled in Tychy.

The 600 is the first entirely new model unveiled by the Italian brand since the New 500 full-electric small car in 2020. Stellantis said at an analyst conference in February that two Fiat EVs will be launched in the second half of 2023, with a second potentially being a Fiat version of the Citroen Ami quadricycle. Opel already sells a derivative of the quadricycle called the Rocks Electric. The Fiat variant could revive the Topolino name, dealer sources told Automotive News Europe last year.

With few new products in the past decade, Fiat’s European market share has been declining sharply. First-quarter sales were up 7.5 percent to 103,312, according to industry group ACEA. However, the market as a whole grew by 18 percent, and Fiat’s share fell to 3.2 percent from 3.5 percent in the same period in 2022.

Inside Our Next Energy’s new metro Detroit battery plants

    [ad_1]

Our Next Energy’s value proposition for those batteries — and for the cells and packs it intends to produce at its own plant — is energy density. Specifically, the company wants to pack the most range into batteries with limited cobalt and nickel, which are in finite supply and often come from sources with poor human rights records.

ONE’s Aries batteries boast 287 Wh/L and about 300 miles of range, compared with the Tesla Model 3’s 232 Wh/L. ONE’s goal is to eventually commercialize its Gemini battery, a dual chemistry architecture capable of more than 600 miles of range, Ijaz said.

ONE also sets itself apart as a U.S.-based battery maker in an industry dominated by Asia, said Glenn Stevens, executive director of MICHauto and vice president of mobility initiatives for the Detroit Regional Chamber.

“Our dependence on really three countries — China, Korea and Japan — is really not sustainable for our own supply chain and our own companies that want to design, engineer and manufacture vehicles for the future,” Stevens said. “So ONE plays a really key role in developing a domestic supply chain with U.S. innovation.”

  • Caterham EV Seven Concept Previews Future Electric Lightweight Sports Car

Caterham EV Seven Concept Previews Future Electric Lightweight Sports Car

    [ad_1]

Rumors about a battery-powered Caterham have been circulating the internet for years but there’s finally official evidence that the automaker is actually working on such a product. The company presents its EV Seven concept that follows the same basic recipe as the rest of the models from the Seven lineup but replaces the combustion engine with a purely electric powertrain.

Helping Caterham with the development is Swindon Powertrain, which provides the electric motor and its auxiliary components. The peak power of the system is 240 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of instantaneous torque. The 0-60 miles per hour acceleration takes approximately 4.0 seconds but there’s no word about the vehicle’s top speed.

Caterham envisions the electric Seven as a track toy, which should be capable of 20-minute drive sessions followed by 15-minute charging sessions and another 20 minutes of track fun. You’d probably be tempted to say a BEV isn’t ideal for track use but Caterham says the concept weighs just around 154 pounds (70 kilograms) more than the Seven 485. The total vehicle mass is just under 1,543 lbs (700 kg).

Providing the electric energy is a 51-kilowatt-hour battery with a usable capacity of around 40 kWh. The firm says the battery has a larger buffer than on a normal EV in order for the pack to safely withstand demanding track use followed by rapid charging. Speaking of charging, the peak DC charging power the EV Seven can support is up to 152 kilowatts.

The electric Caterham benefits from hardware upgrades borrowed from the Seven 420 Cup, too. These include a limited-slip differential and adjustable Bilstein dampers. Other important novelties for a Seven are the regenerative braking and quad-piston brake calipers.

Unfortunately, Caterham says it has no plans to put this electric vehicle into production. Instead, it will use it as “a test bed to see how well an EV powertrain works for our customers’ specific use cases.” The EV Seven will make its public debut during this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. Another electric Caterham concept will be revealed later this year.

  • Aston Martin to join forces with Honda in F1 from 2026

Aston Martin to join forces with Honda in F1 from 2026

    [ad_1]

Honda initially announced its exit from F1 in 2020, and officially withdrew from the championship after helping Max Verstappen clinch his maiden title the following year.

However, it continued to provide power units to Red Bull and still does as part of a supply deal that now runs until the end of the 2025 season.

Honda’s future beyond then had been unclear though, as it was left facing uncertainty about other options on the grid following Red Bull’s decision to tie-up with Ford for its own Powertrains efforts from 2026.

Furthermore, there was intense debate among Honda’s senior management about whether or not to make a formal return to F1 so soon after quitting.

However, Aston Martin’s impressive progress in F1, allied to it being a free agent after 2025 when its current customer Mercedes deal comes to an end, saw it emerge as an ideal candidate for a tie-up.

A deal has now been completed that will see Aston Martin becoming Honda’s official manufacturer team in F1.

Martin Whitmarsh, Group CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies, said: “Our future works partnership with Honda is one of the last parts of the jigsaw puzzle slotting into place for Aston Martin’s ambitious plans in Formula 1.”

Honda says its decision to commit to F1 so soon after walking away was triggered by a ramping up of grand prix racing’s sustainability ambitions.

As well as F1 committing to be net carbon zero by 2030, it is switching to fully sustainable fuels from 2026 when new power units will also be boosted by a greater proportion of electrical power.

Photo by: Zak Mauger / Motorsport Images

Toshihiro Mibe, Global CEO of Honda, said: “One of the key reasons for our decision to take up the new challenge in F1 is that the world’s pinnacle form of racing is striving to become a sustainable racing series, which is in line with the direction Honda is aiming toward carbon neutrality, and it will become a platform which will facilitate the development of our electrification technologies.

“We believe that the technologies and know-how gained from this new challenge can potentially be applied directly to our future mass production electric vehicles, such as an electric flagship sports model, and electrification technologies in various areas, including eVTOL which is currently under research and development.”

Having achieved world title success with Red Bull in 2021 and 2022, and currently leading the standings this year, Honda is clear that it is embarking on the partnership with Aston Martin to deliver more championships.

Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe said: “They are currently working on various measures to strengthen the team and strive to win the F1 championship title.

“So, as they have given the high marks to our F1 power unit technology and we can relate to their sincere attitude and also strong passion to win, we decided to work together and strive for the championship title as Aston Martin Honda.”
