    Tesla Inc. has proposed setting up a factory in India to build electric cars for domestic sale and export, the carmaker told government officials on Wednesday, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter. 

    The proposal comes after India refused to agree to Tesla’s request last year to lower the import tax on cars, which can reach as much as 100 percent. India wanted the carmaker to build vehicles locally but Tesla wanted to test the market first with imports and the talks ended in deadlock.

    While Tesla did not discuss lower import taxes with Indian officials, it proposed setting up a new factory, albeit without specifying a location or investment, said the source, who declined to be named as the talks were private.

    Making cars locally aligns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pitch to attract companies with his “Make in India” campaign, especially as companies look to diversify their supply chains beyond China.

    BMW partners with the boat builder Tyde to create the Icon electric watercraft. It debuts during the 76th Cannes Film Festival. While this is a one-off at the moment, the companies claim the craft is production-ready.

    The Icon has two, 134-horsepower (100-kilowatt) electric motors, and there are six batteries from the defunct BMW i3 providing a total capacity of 240 kilowatt-hours. The boat rides on hydrofoils that lift the craft out of the water when on the move. According to BMW, this setup reduces energy requirements by up to 80 percent. It can cruise at 24 knots (28 miles per hour) and has a max speed of 30 knots (35 mph). The maximum range between recharges is 50 nautical miles.

    Like the recent BMW iX and XM, two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer creates the sound for the drive system. It runs through speakers with Dolby Atmos technology.

    The Icon has a roughly triangular shape that tapers from a wide rear to a pointed nose. The craft measures 43.14 feet (13.15 meters) long, and the rear is 14.8 feet (4.5 meters) wide. Windows dominate each side, which gives occupants an expansive view out of the boat. BMW Designworks is responsible for the look.

    Glass doors at the rear allow access to a lounge area. The boat’s controls are also in there. The captain monitors everything from a 32-inch touchscreen display that runs at a 6K resolution. The user interface is similar to BMW’s iDrive system. It also supports voice commands for getting range info and weather reports.

    Other occupants enjoy 360-degree rotating seats so that they can enjoy the full view out of the large windows. A tablet-based infotainment system lets them control the entertainment.

    While there seem to be no plans actually to mass produce it, BMW believes a boat like the Icon could appeal to private buyers or commercial customers. The hydrofoils don’t create a wake like a normal watercraft, and the electric motors are quieter than combustion engines. So something like this could provide serene journeys across the water.

    The company Candela is exploring similar ideas as the BMW Icon. Its C-8 is an electric boat that uses a 69-kilowatt-hour battery from a Polestar 2. Hydrofoils lift the craft out of the water to reach a cruising speed of 22 knots (25 miles per hour), and the total range is 57 nautical miles.

    The last of a dying breed, the 2024 Ford Mustang is a coupe and convertible that carries on the muscle car era begun in the 1960s. It comes with available V-8 power and puts an emphasis on style and handling. It takes on the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro, both of which will end production after 2023.

    That’s yet to be seen, but it adds more power and ramps up the interior technology of a car that we already liked. We’ll give it a rating after we drive it this summer. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

    Most of it is new. While the 2024 Ford Mustang rides an only slightly tweaked version of the outgoing platform, it gets a new look, more power, more screen space inside, and new performance gadgets. 

    While the Mustang keeps the same basic dimensions, all of the body panels are new. The grille gets a different look by model. It takes on the same basic retro shape it has since 2005, but it’s more upright at the sides, the GT and Dark Horse have outer air intakes in the grille, and the Dark Horse has the largest lower air intakes below the grille. New three-element headlights flank the grille of every model, and they’re mirrored by three-element taillights, Along the sides, the new beltline sits lower, the rear haunches grow more pronounced, and the flanks are smoother without as many creases. Ford claims the new Mustang has the lowest coefficient of drag yet but more downforce than the outgoing model. 

    Inside, increased screen space is the biggest change. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen come standard, though they are separate in the base model and sit under a single piece of glass in other models. Both screens run Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment interface, and both are configurable. Ford gives owners the choice of Normal, Sport, Track, Calm, and Fox Body themes for the instrument cluster, and the center screen offers several performance displays, including three- and five-gauge readouts. 

    The cabin also features a thicker, flat-bottom steering wheel, more soft-touch surfaces, improved materials, and contrast stitching. Buyers can choose a new Carmine Red interior color.

    The Mustang sticks with familiar engines, but both have more power. The base 2.3-liter turbo-4 improves from 310 to 315 hp thanks to the addition of port injection to direct injection, a higher compression ratio, higher thermal efficiency, and reduced internal friction. Ford said the turbo-4 offers up to 25 mpg combined.

    The 5.0-liter V-8 in GT models increases from 455 to 480 hp with the adoption of dual electronic throttle bodies fed by a new dual airbox, and a longer duration exhaust camshaft. It also has port and direct injection like the last model. 

    A version of the 5.0-liter V-8 in the Dark Horse makes 500 hp. All models offer the choice of a 10-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual with rev matching.

    Ford keeps the Mustang on the DC2 platform from the last model, but company engineers have tweaked the shocks, springs, rear suspension links, aluminum lower control arms, and stabilizer bars to improve dynamics. They also quickened the steering ratio from 16.0:1 to 15.5:1.

    The brakes are upgraded for 2024, with Brembo calipers on all models. The top of three brake packages, offered for Performance Pack cars, uses 15.4-inch front rotors with 6-piston calipers and 14.0-inch rear rotors with 4-piston rear calipers. Performance Packs are offered for all models. The versions for the EcoBoost and GT models add a Torsen limited-slip differential and a front strut tower brace. For Performance Pack cars, Ford also offers wider rear wheels and tires, magnetic dampers, an active exhaust, Recaro bucket seats, and an active exhaust. 

    A couple of new performance gadgets provide a little flair for 2024, Remote Rev, which lets owners rev the engine from outside the car with the key fob, and an Electronic Drift Brake. The latter is an L-shaped electronic parking brake that is enabled on the center screen and also puts the car in Track mode. The other driving modes are Normal, Sport, Slippery, Drag, and a customizable setting with up to six profiles. The Mustang’s line lock and launch control features carry over. 

    How much does the 2024 Ford Mustang cost?

    The 2024 Ford Mustang is offered in EcoBoost, Ecoboost Premium, GT, GT Premium, Dark Horse, and Dark Horse Premium trim levels. So far, Ford has pricing available only for the coupe.

    The base EcoBoost model starts at $32,515. Those who want a V-8 will have to spend $44,090 for a GT, and move all the way up to $60,865 for a Dark Horse. The Dark Horse Premium tops the lineup at $64,860, but Ford will also offer Dark Horse S and Dark Horse R models, though the latter may only be for racing customers. 

    Ford hasn’t released a complete list of standard and available features, but the company has shared which safety features come standard. They include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, speed limit recognition, active lane control, evasive steering assist, and rear automatic emergency braking.

    SAN FRANCISCO — Tesla Inc. boss Elon Musk, who has never used traditional advertising to sell cars, said that the automaker would try it and see whether it produced results.

    Musk said it was “ironic” that as CEO of Tesla, he now owns Twitter. The social media platform is highly dependent on ads and will soon be led by advertising veteran Linda Yaccarino, who he hired last week.

    “So I guess I should say advertising is awesome, and everyone should do it,” Musk said at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas. “We will try out a little advertising and see how it goes.”

    It underscores his efforts to shore up investor confidence in the automaker’s prospects at a time when rising competition and a slow economy has forced Tesla to slash prices.

    Since Musk acquired Twitter in October, advertisers have fled the social media platform, worried that their ads could appear next to inappropriate content after the company lost nearly 80 percent of its staff.

    Musk has for years resisted the idea of advertising, tweeting in 2019 that he “hates advertising” and “We use that money to make the product great.”

    But on Tuesday, he said many people did not know about the affordability of Tesla cars and their “amazing” features and functionality.

    It’s hard to believe more than two years have passed since Audi unveiled the A6 E-Tron Concept. Yes, the debut occurred in April 2021 at the Auto Shanghai in China and was followed by the A6 Avant E-Tron Concept in March 2022. Fast forward to May 2023, the company carrying the fabled Four Rings has yet to reveal the production versions. Logic tells us the saloon will lead the way, followed shortly by its long-roof sibling.

    In the meantime, a fresh batch of spy shots shows a high-performance derivative of the sedan. Regarding the body style, it’s technically a liftback since the namesake concept had a tailgate, which appears to be the same case for this prototype. Judging by the lowered ride height, chunky brakes with red calipers, and large wheels with low-profile tires, we’re dealing with an S6 E-Tron. We’re not ruling out the full-fat RS6, but knowing Audi’s modus operandi, the lesser of the two spicy variants should be out first.

    Much like the Q6 E-Tron due in 2024, the A6 E-Tron will ride on the Premium Platform Electric co-developed with Porsche. It’ll utilize more sophisticated hardware compared to the VW Group’s MEB-based electric vehicles by supporting air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and torque vectoring. As for size, we’ll remind you the concept was 4.96 meters (195.2 inches) long, 1.96 meters (77.1 in) wide, and 1.44 meters (56.7 in) tall.

    As for output, even the A6-badged concept had a pair of motors good for 470 horsepower (350 kilowatts) and an instant torque of 590 pound-feet (800 Newton meters). That tells us there’s room for a lot more for the S and RS versions. In the case of the mechanically related Macan EV, Porsche has already confirmed it will offer as much as 603 hp (450 kW) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque in the flagship version.

    The A6 E-Tron concept had a 100-kWh battery and Porsche said the Macan EV’s pack will be just about as large. Thanks to 800-volt tech, it should take about 25 minutes to replenish the battery from 5 to 80 percent while 10 minutes spent at a charging station provided the concept with a driving range of over 186 miles (300 kilometers). Audi said the car would do in excess of 435 miles (700 kilometers) with a fully charged battery and also partially due to the low drag coefficient of 0.22.

    To get an idea of what the Ingolstadt-based luxury marque is hiding beneath the prototype’s camouflage, look no further than the adjacent photo gallery of the concept car. Audi has already confirmed it’ll use even numbers for EVs, so this car will definitely be called the A6 while the current combustion-engined vehicle will transition to the A7 moniker.

    The debut is likely scheduled to take place later in 2024, after the Q6 E-Tron. The A6 Avant E-Tron should land in 2025, with the high-performance models likely not far behind.

    The 2024 Kia Seltos is a small five-seat crossover that slips into the Kia lineup between the larger Sportage and smaller Kia Soul. Competitors outside the Kia family include the Hyundai Kona and Honda HR-V, among many others in this popular class. 

    New in 2021, the Seltos embraces a mid-cycle refresh for 2024 that promises a smoother transmission, good standard features, and a more daring style than other small crossovers. Fuel economy falls short, however, but all-wheel drive remains an option. We give it a 5.6 out of 10, pending safety scores. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

    Revised front ends and a new X-Line trim highlight the cosmetic differences in the mid-cycle refresh, and a new dash punctuates the interior. A broader, more unified grille stretches out to stacked headlights, available as LED on top trims, and an available light bar cinches the waist of the grille at night. Kia integrated the vertical fog lights with the running lights, and updated the wheel designs and color options as well. 

    The X-Line trim proliferating through Kia’s crossover lineup adopts some off-road elements, such as a black roof rack bridge, distinct 18-inch wheels, and black elements on the door and grille. 

    Inside, a flatter, lower dash stretches horizontally like the grille to accommodate available twin 10.3-inch screen displays. Otherwise, the straightforward interior with climate buttons and a mechanical shifter in the console carries over, as does the overreliance on gloss-black plastic panels. 

    The 2024 Seltos also sports some powertrain upgrades, most notably an 8-speed automatic transmission replacing a clunky 7-speed dual-clutch automatic on the outgoing model. That pairs with a more potent 1.6-liter turbo-4 that delivers 195 hp, up from 175 hp in the outgoing model. The base powertrain remains the same, with a 2.0-liter inline-4 making 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. It has a CVT driving power to the front wheels, though optional all-wheel drive has a center differential lock to apportion power to the axle that needs it most.

    The interior dimensions remain the same, and the Seltos has one of the roomier cabins in the class, highlighted by good rear legroom, reclining rear seats, and expansive cargo room. There are five seatbelts, but only four adults will fit. The 26.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats can expand to 62.8 cubes with the seats folded down, which is as much as many compact crossovers. 

    The bones of the Seltos haven’t changed, so we expect mixed crash-test results to carry over. A disappointing four-star rating from the NHTSA countered an IIHS Top Safety Pick award in top trims on the 2023 Seltos. Standard tech includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitors come on all but the base trim, and options range from adaptive cruise control down to a stop to limited hands-free driving. 

    How much does the 2024 Kia Seltos cost?

    The base 2024 Kia Seltos LX carries a sticker price of $25,715 before any options, including a mandatory $1,325 delivery fee. That model comes standard with all-wheel drive, however. Standard features include four USB ports, cloth seats, air conditioning, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. 

    The next trim level up, the Seltos S, is $1,100 more with AWD, but only $600 more if you’re happy with front-wheel drive. The EX adds $800 more for FWD, but a substantial $1,500 more for the AWD trim. 

    The base Seltos LX is one of the cheaper all-wheel drive small SUVs on the market, if that’s what you’re seeking. Otherwise, the EX in FWD form is a good balance of features and price, at just above $27,000. 

    The new $30,015 X-Line trim adds an edgier look but not any more functionality than the LX, S, EX, and $31,315 SX grades. A fully optioned Seltos tops out in the low to mid-$30,000s.

    Options range from a new panoramic screen setup with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster beside a 10.3-inch touchscreen to a power tailgate and cooled front seats.

    Track action was due to start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway today at 9.00am local (Eastern) time, with first practice scheduled to run until 11:15am. But early morning rain soaked the 2.5-mile oval.

    After rain showers washed out the morning session, the track dried and teams were allowed to bring their cars to pitlane at 1:50pm local time for what should have been practice two.

    But just as drivers were about to hit the track at 2:15pm for their installation laps, the rain returned and cars were sent back to their garages just before 2:30pm.

    Another rain shower then soaked the track, and IndyCar officially gave up hope at 4:10pm local time over the track drying in time to get any running in.

    The weather forecast is much better for the rest of the week, with sunny conditions expected tomorrow once the rain bands have blown through.

    Track activity is scheduled to resume at 10:00am on Wednesday with five minutes of installation laps for all cars, followed by RC Enerson’s rookie orientation programme between 10:15am and midday. Practice for all cars will take place from noon until 6:00pm.

    On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the cars will be on track from 12 noon to 6.00pm. The so-called ‘Fast Friday’ is traditionally when race set-ups take less of a priority and qualifying simulation runs take precedence.

    The BorgWarner turbos common to the Honda and Chevrolet engines will be wound up from 1.3-bar boost to 1.5-bar, a level at which they’ll remain until end of play on Sunday evening.

    The field will be divided in half for two final half hour practices on Saturday morning before qualifying commences at 11am. When every car in the qualifying order for Saturday has had at least one chance to qualify, teams may choose from two lanes for subsequent attempts.

    Cars in the Priority Lane (Lane 1) must withdraw their qualified time but get priority access to the track ahead of Lane 2. That second lane is for cars that have already qualified and want to try to improve their position, but choose not to risk forfeiting the speed average they have already set.

    When the gun goes off at 5.50pm, positions 13-30 will be set, and those drivers will not re-qualify on Sunday. The 12 drivers who will contest the front four rows of three, and the four drivers who will squabble over the three slots on the last row will now have been defined.

    On Sunday 21 May, from 11.30am, the dozen drivers still in the fight for pole will get a one-hour practice session, and this will be immediately followed by an hour’s practice for the desperate quartet due to battle over the last row.

    From 2.00 to 3.00pm comes Top 12 qualifying, in which positions seven through 12 will be determined. Their running order is based on Saturday times, slowest to fastest, and each car is guaranteed one attempt. The quickest of the six advance to the Firestone Fast Six shootout.

    At 4.00pm, the four Last Chance Qualifiers will compete for positions 31-33. Each car is guaranteed one attempt and may make multiple attempts until time expires at 5.00pm. Each car’s most recent qualification speed will remain eligible for the starting lineup until the time is withdrawn or qualifications end.

    At 5.15pm comes the Firestone Fast Six shootout for pole. Positions 1-6 will be determined and running order is based on times from top 12 Qualifying, slowest to fastest. Each car is guaranteed one attempt.

    The top 12 drivers on the starting grid will receive IndyCar Series points, with polewinner earning 12, the second fastest 11, down to one point for the 12th-placed starter.

    On Monday 22 May, the engines are returned to 1.3-bar turbo boost – race boost levels – for two hours of practice, 1.00-3.00pm. Several teams and drivers say this can be an extremely useful session as it covers the kind of time frame of the Indy 500 itself, therefore with (hopefully) comparable temperatures and track conditions.

    There is no track activity from Tuesday 23 May through to Thursday 25 May and gates are closed to the public. However, on the Tuesday and Wednesday, from 11.00am to 1.00pm, teams are allowed to do static pit stop practice on pitlane, albeit with no engines running.

    Friday 26 May is Carb Day. From 11.00am to 1.00pm, the cars will hit the oval for the final time before the race.

    Fast X is coming out this Friday and is supposed to be the penultimate movie of a franchise that started way back in 2001. The tenth movie has been written as half of a two-part finale, with the series planned to end after the eleventh title. However, that might not actually be the case as Vin Diesel has strongly hinted there is a distinct possibility the epilogue will be stretched to include a third movie.

    The disclosure was made in Rome during the world premiere of the latest movie. “Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter. And after the studio saw this one, they said, ‘Could you make ‘Fast X,’ the finale, a trilogy?’” Michelle Rodriguez also alluded it might just happen: “It’s three acts in any story.”

     

    Meanwhile, the eleventh movie will be co-written by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey) and Oren Uziel (The Lost City). Louis Leterrier will be the director, having already been at the helm of Fast X. An extension of the already long-running franchise could depend on the success of the forthcoming title, which reportedly had a massive budget of $340 million, according to The Wrap.

    It’ll be interesting to see whether there will be more spin-offs in the same vein as Hobbs & Shaw. Director David Leitch said in December 2022 that a sequel depends on Dwayne Johnson as “The Rock” has a busy schedule. A potential Fast and Furious 12 movie might put spinoffs on the back burner to have a budget prepared for a grand finale.

    Well friends, we’ve reached the end of the line for this side road of the Fast and Furious saga. By that, we mean the slate of teaser previews promoting the premiere of Fast X which is less than a week away. This is the final trailer for the new film, and at over four minutes long, it isn’t short on content.

    Like previous trailers, we see plenty of explosions, cool cars, and references to family. This time around, however, there’s less attention given to the various cars and wild car stunts. Instead, we spend a lot of time watching people fight. Letty and Cipher (played by Michelle Rodriguez and Charlize Theron) engage in a serious round of fisticuffs, while the reunion between Han (Sung Kang) and Deckard (Jason Statham) isn’t all hugs and puppies. Lest we forget, Deckard was the one who killed tried to kill Han way back in the franchise’s third film Tokyo Drift, though we don’t find that out until the seventh film. Yeah, there’s some drama here.

    Of course, Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto is fighting with everybody to keep his racing family safe. That doesn’t just include Dante, the new big bad played by Jason Momoa. There’s a new government team leader including an angry dude named Aimes (played by Alan Ritchson) who tells Dom that “the days where one man behind the wheel of a car can make a difference are over.” Aimes is also responsible for the neat flashback sequence at the start of the trailer, conveniently reminding us of all nine Fast movies that have led to this one.

    Don’t worry, car fans. While fight sequences take center stage, we also see plenty of motorized excitement. Once again, we’re treated to the scene where Dom backs his classic black Charger out of a moving cargo jet, landing triumphantly on bad guys in SUVs. We also see Dom driving new Chargers, and while we don’t see it in action, the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT EV concept makes a brief appearance parked outside the Toretto homestead in front of a Pagani.

    By now, it’s well-known that the Fast saga is nearing its ultimate conclusion. Just one more movie is slated to follow this one, billed as a direct sequel to what happens in Fast X. Will the late Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Conner make a digital return before the final scene is shot? Will Gisele, played in three movies by Gal Gadot return from the dead as Han did? Perhaps some of these questions will be answered when Fast X opens in theaters on May 19.

    Toyota has won all three races in the WEC so far this year, but has done so against revitalised opposition with the arrival of Ferrari, Porsche and Cadillac into the top class, while Peugeot has embarked on a full-season effort after appearing midway through 2022.

    Already these new programmes have shown glimpses of promise, which will give Toyota pause for thought as it targets a sixth consecutive victory at La Sarthe. Ferrari scooped pole in Sebring for its new 499P Le Mans Hypercar, while Porsche became the first LMDh manufacturer using the spec hybrid system to take a podium in Portugal.

    Ahead of next month’s centenary Le Mans, host Martyn Lee is joined on the podcast by sportscar expert Gary Watkins and Autosport Plus editor James Newbold to discuss events in the WEC so far this season.

    They share their views on the fortunes of the Hypercar class manufacturers, the new rules that have led to the current boom in sportscar racing interest, and run the rule over the ever-unpredictable LMP2 and GTE Am classes that will add further intrigue to what promises to be an enthralling edition of the world’s most famous endurance race.

    Since the podcast was recorded, the FIA and Le Mans organiser the Automobile Club de l’Ouest have lifted the WEC’s ban on tyre warmers on a one-off basis for Le Mans.
