    Guest commentary: Automakers are the new enablers of telematics for the consumer

    Many of us working in the connected car space are searching for explanations for the slow consumer adoption of telematics-enabled, usage-based insurance, or UBI, programs, especially as more new vehicles are embedded with connectivity, which helps power personalized insurance policies and can benefit customers.

    Although insurers have widely embraced data, including driving and vehicle data or telematics data, to price policies and manage claims risk, consumer-driven usage has yet to truly expand. But as both vehicle and telematics technologies evolve, I believe we need to engage a key player often missing in the conversation to help customers discover the benefits of using their data for insurance: automakers.

    In our latest U.S. Consumer Survey, conducted in December 2021, we found that 67 percent of respondents are aware that their driving and vehicle data can be used for insurance discounts. However, only 22 percent of consumers have used their data for discounts on their insurance premium.

    Based on the survey results, consumers can see the value of using their driving and vehicle data but may struggle to engage in UBI programs. So, how can automakers help their customers take advantage of their telematics data?

    Automakers, in fact, already play a significant role in supporting their customers’ engagement in UBI programs. They are enabling consumer participation through embedded connectivity, which allows the collection and transmission or sharing of vehicle and driving behavior data. They are also partnering with insurance companies and other third parties to find optimal opportunities to leverage their vehicle and driving data. Automakers are certainly engaged in delivering a more personalized experience for their customers.

    But they can do more.

    Last week 40,055 vehicles were axed from production plans because of the microchip shortage worldwide as automakers continue grappling with supply chain woes, according to the latest estimate by AutoForecast Solutions.

    Most of last week’s cuts were at European assembly plants, where about 29,300 vehicles were removed from factory schedules. There were also losses at plants in North America, Asia outside of China, and the Middle East and Africa, while factories in China and South America had no cuts.

    “With every passing week, additional capacity for automotive chips comes online, but digging out from the hole that was created almost three years ago takes time,” Sam Fiorani, AutoForecast Solutions vice president of global vehicle forecasting, said in an email.

    Palou’s team played the tire strategy perfectly to allow the 2021 champion to lead 52 of the 85 laps, while McLaren team-mates Pato O’Ward and Alexander Rossi were able to pass Lundgaard’s Rahal Letterman Lanigan car to complete the podium.

    Lundgaard and fellow front row starter Felix Rosenqvist (McLaren) elected to start the race on primary tyres, while third starter Palou was the only driver in the top seven to choose alternates.

    Lundgaard made a great start to get the jump on Rosenqvist, but Palou was all over him using his grippier tires and through Turns 12 and 13 he got ahead to cross the line first.

    Jack Harvey had also passed Rosenqvist to run third, while further around the opening lap Rossi – up from 10th – used his alternates to claim fourth. 

    Racing was interrupted by yellows flew retrieve the two Dale Coyne Racing cars of David Malukas and Sting Ray Robb which collided at Turn 7, allowing Scott McLaughlin and Romain Grosjean to pit for new front wings.

    Palou held off Lundgaard at the lap six restart as Harvey lost out to Rossi on the back straight after a heavy Turn 1 lockup, the Briton’s flat-spotted tyres causing him to tumble back down the order over the following laps.

    Behind, reigning champion Will Power was punted into a spin at Turn 2 by Kyle Kirkwood, earning the Andretti Autosport driver a penalty that dropped him to the back of the field behind his Penske rival. 

    Lundgaard closed on Palou when his softer tyres started to go off, prompting Palou and fellow alternate starter Rossi pitted on lap 18. Lundgaard followed them in two laps later for a set of alternates, but emerged two seconds behind Palou, as Rosenqvist and O’Ward went two laps longer.

    Lundgaard took the net lead from Palou under braking for Turn 7 on lap 24 while off-strategy team-mate Graham Rahal led, having twice pitted under yellow due to suffering damage in the opening laps.

    RLL didn’t ask Rahal to let Lundgaard by, and he was unable to take full advantage of his tyres until Rahal pitted on lap 31. This was four laps after O’Ward on alternates passed Rossi on primaries before making an early second stop for primaries.

    Palou soon came back at Lundgaard, who had lost the lead by the time he came in for a second set of red tyres. O’Ward’s undercut of both Palou and Lundgaard only gave him a temporary lead before both navigated a route past.

    Palou (primaries) headed Lundgaard (alternates) and O’Ward on primaries following the conclusion of the second stops, with Rosenqvist (alternates) and Rossi (primaries) chasing behind.

    Lundgaard’s second set of alternates left him prey to O’Ward, who moved ahead before the Dane made his final stop on lap 59. Palou came in on the following tour, both taking primaries, while O’Ward switched to alternates at his lap 62 service before resuming second.

    When Lundgaard ran out of push-to-pass boost, Rossi moved ahead into Turn 7 with nine laps to go, but the 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner was unable to catch team-mate O’Ward ahead as Palou won by 16.8s.

    Lundgaard had to settle for fifth, just holding off Rosenqvist who moved into fifth when Colton Herta was called for blocking.

    Herta fell back to ninth, ahead of Rahal, in the final laps allowing Ganassi’s Scott Dixon, leading Penske runner Josef Newgarden and Marcus Ericsson into the top eight.

    Toyota retires Evans from WRC Rally Portugal

    Evans ran off the road on stage seven (Mortagua, 18.15km) while occupying sixth position following a challenging day opening the road.

    A drought breaking victory in Croatia last month meant the Welshman headed to Portugal tied at the top of the championship standings with part-time Toyota team-mate Sebastien Ogier, who isn’t competing in Portugal this weekend.

    Evans had been struggling with the balance of GR Yaris throughout the day having faced the worst of the road conditions.

    Footage has now revealed that Evans went off the road during stage seven at speed resulting in a heavy collision into trees. The GR Yaris sustained heavy damage in the impact which triggered a small fire that was quickly extinguished.

    Evans and co-driver Scott Martin emerged from the incident unscathed and have since undergone medical checks.

    After recovering the car Toyota has now confirmed the damage is too severe to allow Evans to rejoin the rally to salvage points from Sunday’s Power Stage.

    “Elfyn and Scott underwent medical checks after their accident and are both doing well,” read a statement from the Toyota team.

    “After inspecting the damage to car #33, the team has taken the decision to retire it from the rally.”

    Friday proved to be a bittersweet day for Toyota as world champion Kalle Rovanpera completed the eight stages leading the rally by 10.8s from Hyundai’s Dani Sordo. The Finn, starting second on the road, won three of the eight stages.

    Rovanpera was the team’s only car to navigate through the schedule after team-mate Takamoto Katsuta was forced to retire after suffering an alternator failure.

    The problem emerged on the first stage which ultimately proved terminal after stage two. The Japanese will however rejoin the rally on Saturday.

    “We had to manage it but we knew it was going to be difficult to continue as we knew everything would shutdown,” said Katsuta.

    “I felt good with the car but unfortunately the battery was completely gone before stage three.”

    The 2024 BMW X5 luxury SUV seats five passengers but it’s sized big enough to compete with other three-row luxury models such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Genesis GV80. In M grades, it vies with the Porsche Cayenne. 

    The 2024 X5 returns with even more standard tech and convenience features, as well as a standard mild-hybrid powertrain. The tech upgrades keep it fresh, and the style and powertrain tweaks should help it maintain its edge over luxury rivals. The updates may boost last year’s TCC Rating of 6.8 out of 10, but we won’t adjust the rating until we drive it this summer. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

    A major refresh welcomes the 2024 BMW X5, with the introduction of a new user interface headlined by a 14.9-inch touchscreen. The front and rear ends get a mild makeover, and electrification spans the engine lineup for less emissions and greater power. 

    This generation of the X5 launched in 2019, and the thorough refresh modernizes BMW’s bestselling model on the inside and out. BMW turns up the corners of its face into a smile with vertical air intakes that move the wide and low look into a chunkier SUV vibe. BMW didn’t go full beaver teeth on the grille, as it did on its M3/M4, opting instead to just illuminate it, if desired. The narrower LED headlights represent the biggest change, with arrow-shaped DRLs that double as indicators sweeping to the side. A thinner taillight design parts like lips kissing the back end. 

    Inside marks a much bigger change, with a horizontal theme stretching open the cockpit. Like other new BMWs, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen curves under a single pane glass toward the driver. Most of the climate control buttons migrate into the touchscreen, leaving only a tiny band of controls for the hazards, defrosters, and volume knob. Slim center vents sit in between the touchscreen and climate bar, jutting out as the rest of the central dash recedes to the corners and underscored by a light bar. A controller dial and drive mode buttons remain in the console, which now has a push button gear selector instead of a lever. 

    The selector engages a revised turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that controls the start/stop function and cuts engine power while coasting in Eco mode. This new powertrain makes 40 hp and 51 lb-ft of torque more than its predecessor, to 375 hp and as much as 398 lb-ft with the mild-hybrid engaged. BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds. Only the base X5 sDrive40i is rear-wheel drive; every other X5 is all-wheel drive and comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It rides on 20-inch wheels with run-flat tires, though 21-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires and 22-inch wheels with performance tires are options. 

    The X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid also receives critical updates. A larger 25.7-kwh battery pack helps bump the electric range by 10 miles to 40 miles total, which should satisfy most daily commuters in EV power only. The new inline-6 embraces greater efficiency with a new injection system and improved exhaust components, while a new synchronous motor increases output by 83 horsepower. Together, the powertrain produces 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds. Additionally, at a max charge rate of 7.4 kw on a 240-volt connection, the xDrive50e can charge to full in three hours and 15 minutes. 

    The X5 M60i xDrive receives a mild-hybrid system with its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. Output is 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, and it hits 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. That mild-hybrid powertrain migrates for the first time to the X5 M Competition that makes 617 hp on its way to a 3.7-second 0-60 mph time. 

    Fuel economy increases 2 mpg and there’s no penalty for all-wheel drive on 40i models; they both have EPA ratings of 23 mpg city, 27 highway, 25 combined. The M60i drops to a 17/22/19 mpg slash line, and the X5 M Competition gets 13/18/15 mpg. The X5 plug-in hybrid has not been certified yet. 

    The X5 only comes with five seats this year, and the lack of a third row optimizes the cargo space better. It’s roomier, and the standard front sport buckets are as comfy as they are supportive. They can be upgraded with seat cooling and massagers, and heated armrests remain a BMW charm on par with the heated steering wheel. In back, a split tailgate makes grocery runs all the more secure.

    How much does the 2024 BMW X5 cost?

    The X5 costs about $3,500 more than the 2023 model, at $66,195 including a modest $995 destination fee. Riding on 20-inch wheels with run-flat tires, the base X5 sDrive40i comes with a digital key, a one-year satellite radio trial, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity as well as wireless smartphone charging, and an updated infotainment system with greater data processing. Standard comfort features include heated front sport seats covered in synthetic leather and a panoramic sunroof. That’s a pretty good haul for the increased price. 

    Standard driver-assist features include automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, automatic high beams, a driver attention monitor, and an automatic reverse parking that can back the SUV out of a tight spot without the driver in the vehicle. Adaptive cruise control costs extra.

    All-wheel drive costs $2,300 more on the X5 xDrive40i. 

    The 2024 X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid runs $5,000 more to $73,495, and in addition to the increased range, it has an air suspension on both axles and a running soundtrack that changes with the throttle inputs. 

    The 2024 X5 M tops the performance and price charts at $123,295.

    But a combination of factors is putting a pinch on shipping logistics, he said.

    During the pandemic, many ship companies decided to replace their fleets with more fuel-efficient vessels, and there is now a shortage of ships as new ones are being built.

    Meanwhile, exploding auto exports from China are gobbling up space on available carriers. Last year, China exported about 3 million vehicles; this year, exports could rise to 4 million, Moro said as Mazda announced its full fiscal-year financial results.

    “This has led to more competition for ships,” said Moro, the former U.S. regional boss for Mazda who takes the global helm from current CEO Akira Marumoto in June.

    “So we are working hard to secure ships from Japan,” he added. “We are consulting with ship companies and working to standardize our shipping schedule as much as possible.”

    Mazda imports about two-thirds of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. That includes the top-selling CX-5 compact crossover and the newly launched CX-90 large crossover.

    Pricing power

    Mazda expects U.S. demand to swell this year as it ramps up deliveries of the U.S.-built CX-50 and the Japan-built CX-90 and cashes in on steadily improving U.S. pricing power for its products.

    Rising revenue per vehicle in Mazda’s most important market helped propel a 36 percent surge in operating profit for the fiscal year that ended March 31, even amid falling vehicle sales. The impact is the result of a brand-burnishing strategy years in the making.

    Over the past four years, Mazda’s average transaction price in the U.S. has risen by $7,000 – topping out at $33,700 in 2022 compared with $26,700 in 2018, the company said.

    The shift drove the automaker to record-high annual revenue for the fiscal year just ended, even as global sales shrank to 1.11 million vehicles from 1.56 million vehicles four years ago.

    April’s introduction of the large CX-90 will further stoke U.S. sales while moving the brand’s position upmarket. Meanwhile, output of the CX-50 will be in full swing in the fall.

    “We hope to drive strong growth centering on our new product launches,” global sales chief Yasuhiro Aoyama said in announcing Mazda’s financial results. “We can achieve that.”

    Alabama ramp-up

    The Alabama plant that builds the CX-50 has operated on a single shift since last year as it sorts out quality and staffing issues. In July, a second shift will begin there, opening the valve on output.

    U.S. sales of the CX-50 totaled only 9,764 vehicles in the first three months of 2023.

    The Huntsville factory is jointly operated by Mazda and Toyota Motor Corp., with its total capacity of 300,000 split in half. Mazda has said the CX-50 alone could reach 150,000 vehicles.

    Mazda expects overall brand sales in North America, its largest market by far, to rise 22 percent this fiscal year to 496,000 vehicles. That will power a 17 percent rise in global sales to 1.3 million vehicles.

    In Europe, where Mazda has introduced the CX-60 crossover, volume is predicted to go up 18 percent to 189,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, sales in China are forecast to rise to 125,000 vehicles as the automaker adds localized production of the CX-50 in the world’s biggest car market.

    It’s the dawn of a new era for Aston Martin as the luxury brand is preparing to introduce no fewer than eight models between now and 2026. A direct successor to the DB11 will lead the way, and today, we can share the first spy shots of the new Vantage in Roadster guise. How new is it? Well, it appears to be more along the lines of a facelift rather than a true next-gen car unless this is an early test mule instead of a more evolved prototype.

    That’s not all too surprising since the DB11’s replacement has been caught looking quite familiar, so Aston Martin apparently doesn’t intend to massively change the designs of its cars. From what we can tell, the new droptop Vantage has a wider grille and completely new headlights with a sweptback layout. A prominent front spoiler lip is hard to miss, as are hood vents repositioned closer to the center. The rear looks virtually unchanged, provided the camo isn’t hiding some minor revisions.

    While the exterior is still as stunning as ever, the interior could use a complete refresh and ditch the old Mercedes-sourced infotainment for a newer setup. With automakers moving away from physical buttons and knobs, the Vantage’s current cabin can be described as cluttered by comparison since it has quite a few traditional controls. Not that there’s anything wrong with that as some people (including yours truly) still prefer the good ol’ buttons.

    As for the oily bits, Aston Martin has already bid adieu to the V12, so expect the new Vantage Roadster to get V8 power. We’ll remind you that the F1 Edition had 527 horsepower and 505 pound-feet (685 Newton-meters) of torque from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

    Beyond its traditional front-engined machines, the folks from Gaydon are also working on the Valhalla and have not ruled out doing another wild hypercar to follow up on the Valkyrie. The real revolution will take place in 2025 when Aston Martin will introduce its first production EV.

    On the scale of vehicles that seem to attract trouble, pickup trucks with high-top bed toppers land somewhere between semi-trucks and cars driven by the juvenile at heart leaving their first cars and coffee. This is especially true if the bed topper almost doubles the vehicle’s height and is made of a thin gauge metal like aluminum or steel. Like a moth attracted to flame, it’s only a matter of time before something bad happens. 

    In the case of the truck in this video on ViralHog’s YouTube site, it takes exactly 22 seconds for something bad to happen, and the driver doesn’t even leave the parking lot. A camera captures the video footage inside an overhang in front of what looks like a store with steel roll-up doors. Judging from the light, it looks early in the day. Perhaps the driver hasn’t had coffee yet, or even a matcha chai latte. 

    Whatever the driver drinks to wake up, it’s nothing like the powerful shot of adrenaline they must have received from the accident. There is a loud crash that lifts the truck’s front wheels in the air, causing it to turn and almost take out a row of motorbikes. Adding to the dramatic effect, the video shakes as the impact sends shockwaves through the overhang.

    Seemingly unphased, the driver calmly backs up and casually drives away. The metal topper is still intact and firmly mounted to the pickup truck, but the top is opened up like a sardine can. As the truck leaves the scene, a woman leaves the shop and starts taking pictures with her cell phone. She runs after the truck and is gone for 15 seconds, most likely trying to get the driver’s info or the license plate in case there’s damage to the building. 

    Judging from the video, the truck is an Izuzu pickup truck, a brand no longer sold in the US. While not as dramatic as a Kia Soul going airborne after hitting a tire or a Citroen Ami rolling over in Monaco, it just goes to show that tall pickup truck toppers and low overhangs don’t mix, regardless of what part of the world you live in.

    Automakers do their best to keep their future products a secret. However, China’s odd regulatory requirements sometimes spill the beans before a model’s official debut. That’s what happened with the 2024 Buick Envision S and Envision Plus, with images and details leaking from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

    The Envision S looks like the crossover we get in America, just with new front and rear fascias. The crossover adopts the brand’s new Pure Design styling language, giving the model thin daytime running lights high on the face, separated headlights, and a wide grille that looks like an isosceles trapezoid. The model also wears the brand’s new emblem.

    At the back, the Envision S sports a new taillight design, which sits above a modestly revamped bumper and diffuser. According to the government documents, the updated crossover still uses its 2.0-liter engine, which makes 227 horsepower.

    The updated Envision Plus also leaked, which made its official debut in early 2021. It also undergoes a styling makeover, adopting the brand’s new design ethos. It has narrow headlights and a trapezoidal grille. It’ll also receive updated rear-end styling like the S. The leaked documents indicate that the larger seven-seat Envision Plus will have a 1.5-liter engine under the hood making 201 horsepower, which complements a 2.0-liter four-cylinder option that’s available.

    The leaked information didn’t include any photos of the two models’ interiors. However, the pair could receive a new cabin layout that replaces the traditional setup with a dash-spanning dual-screen one. Such an interior debuted last month on the Envista that’s coming to the US, which first broke cover for the Chinese market in 2022.

    The current Buick Envision is in the middle of its second generation, and there are signs that the automaker is readying its redesign for the US. The leaked images provide a sneak peek of what the updated model could look like in North America, which could arrive later this year. The 2023 Envision currently features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 228 horsepower. It pairs with a nine-speed automatic.

    The next-generation Toyota Tacoma is almost here, but fresh spy photos from Michigan might give us a preview of a special new trim. We think this is the overlanding-themed Tacoma Trailhunter, and though there’s plenty of camouflage hiding the truck, there’s some strong evidence that supports our theory.

    Before we get to Trailhunter, let’s first make sure this is a Tacoma. That’s easily done, as we’re clearly dealing with a mid-size truck that matches the edgy shape of the new Taco. Looking closely at the front, we can see the headlight design is match to both leaked images, and to Toyota’s official Trailhunter teaser photos. The wheels also match up with Toyota teasers, so there’s no question we’re dealing with the forthcoming Tacoma.

    Now, what about this being a Trailhunter? Our spy sources point out the combination of the crew cab with a longer bed, something we likely won’t see on the TRD Pro trim. The ride height of this truck also doesn’t quite fit with our vision of a TRD Pro, though the camouflage could be throwing off perspective just a bit. However, it definitely wears meaty tires for clawing through rough terrain. The rear bumper looks similar to the one in the Trailhunter teaser, though sadly we can’t see red recovery hooks. Up top, there’s obviously a rack bolted to the truck’s roof. And what do we have on the passenger side? That would be a snorkel.

    All this being said, it’s certainly possible there’s a TRD Pro with upgraded equipment under all that camouflage. It’s worth noting that the wheel design matches a teaser image for what we believe is the TRD Pro model, complete with TRD on the center cap. The wheels on this test vehicle have no center cap, but there’s nothing saying a Tacoma Trailhunter can ride on TRD wheels. And the longer bed certainly fits with a vehicle designed to carry tents and camping gear for off-grid getaways.

    Fortunately, we don’t have long to wait before getting full disclosure. Toyota has confirmed the next-gen Tacoma will debut on May 19, Trailhunter trim and all.
