Geneva auto show revamped for 2024 as ‘affordable’ event

The Geneva auto show will return in 2024 with a new, “affordable” concept for exhibitors and visitors.

The exhibition, previously held every year, has not been held since it was cancelled in 2020 in the early days of the coronavirus outbreak.

Organizers plan to hold the show from Feb. 26 to March 3 next year in its traditional home at the Palexpo convention center near the Geneva airport with a modified exhibition concept and lower hotel costs.

“The halls in Geneva have been rented and also already paid for,” Sandro Mesquita, the Geneva International Motor Show company’s managing director, told Automotive News sister publication Automobilwoche.

Mesquita emphasized the payment to counter speculation that the show was only a half-hearted attempt at revival and that it could be buried again without high costs if necessary.

Organizers have developed a new concept for the show to significantly reduce the high costs of exhibiting that have put off many auto companies.

“We are offering exhibitors preconfigured booths, so they do not have to build their own booth. We call this plug-and-play,” Mesquita said.

The booths are smaller and less elaborately designed than those seen in the past. “Exhibitors just need to choose the color of the booth and bring their branding,” Mesquita said.

“Of course, exhibitors are equally welcome to have their own booths,” he added.

The show is also trying to reduce the high costs of hotel rooms during the show. In the past, hotel owners have considerably hiked prices.

“We have signed framework agreements for reasonable prices with 16 hotels in all categories. There will be no last-minute surcharges,” Mesquita said.

Organizers expect 10,000 journalists and 300,000 visitors to attend the event over the seven days. This is much more modest than the last auto show in March 2019, when 600,000 visitors attended.

The show is sponsored by Qatar Tourism, which is holding a similar event in the country’s capital of Doha from Oct. 5. to 14 this year.

  • 2024 Toyota Tacoma Spied Looking Like A Trailhunter Ahead Of May 19 Debut

2024 Toyota Tacoma Spied Looking Like A Trailhunter Ahead Of May 19 Debut

    [ad_1]

The next-generation Toyota Tacoma is almost here, but fresh spy photos from Michigan might give us a preview of a special new trim. We think this is the overlanding-themed Tacoma Trailhunter, and though there’s plenty of camouflage hiding the truck, there’s some strong evidence that supports our theory.

Before we get to Trailhunter, let’s first make sure this is a Tacoma. That’s easily done, as we’re clearly dealing with a mid-size truck that matches the edgy shape of the new Taco. Looking closely at the front, we can see the headlight design is match to both leaked images, and to Toyota’s official Trailhunter teaser photos. The wheels also match up with Toyota teasers, so there’s no question we’re dealing with the forthcoming Tacoma.

Now, what about this being a Trailhunter? Our spy sources point out the combination of the crew cab with a longer bed, something we likely won’t see on the TRD Pro trim. The ride height of this truck also doesn’t quite fit with our vision of a TRD Pro, though the camouflage could be throwing off perspective just a bit. However, it definitely wears meaty tires for clawing through rough terrain. The rear bumper looks similar to the one in the Trailhunter teaser, though sadly we can’t see red recovery hooks. Up top, there’s obviously a rack bolted to the truck’s roof. And what do we have on the passenger side? That would be a snorkel.

All this being said, it’s certainly possible there’s a TRD Pro with upgraded equipment under all that camouflage. It’s worth noting that the wheel design matches a teaser image for what we believe is the TRD Pro model, complete with TRD on the center cap. The wheels on this test vehicle have no center cap, but there’s nothing saying a Tacoma Trailhunter can ride on TRD wheels. And the longer bed certainly fits with a vehicle designed to carry tents and camping gear for off-grid getaways.

Fortunately, we don’t have long to wait before getting full disclosure. Toyota has confirmed the next-gen Tacoma will debut on May 19, Trailhunter trim and all.

  • Hyundai Ioniq 6 Wins 2023 World Car Of The Year Award And Two Others

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Wins 2023 World Car Of The Year Award And Two Others

Hyundai has now claimed the World Car of the Year Award two times in a row, with the Ioniq 6 taking top honors for 2023. The Ioniq 5 won it along with two other categories in 2022. The Ioniq 6 repeated those wins, taking the World Car Design of the Year and World Electric Vehicle Awards again. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 was one of three finalists for the COTY honor, beating the BMW X1/iX1 and Kia Niro for the top title.

“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious honor two years in a row, which recognizes the tremendous talents and unrelenting efforts of everyone at Hyundai Motor Company to bring EVs like Ioniq 6 to market,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.

The organization crowned the Lucid Air as the World Luxury Car, which had to beat out the BMW 7 Series and the Genesis G90 for the award. The Kia EV6 GT won the World Performance Car title, getting more votes than the redesigned Nissan Z and the all-wheel-drive Toyota GR Corolla with its 300-horsepower 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. The Kia has 576 hp on tap and can reach 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. The World Urban Car Award went to the Citroen C3, which faced off against the Volkswagen Taigo/Nivus and the ORA Funky Cat/Haomao.

Hyundai beat out the BMW i7 and Lucid Air for the EV award. It had to face off against the Land Rover Range Rover and the Lucid Air for the design title.

The World Car Awards used a jury of 100 international automotive journalists from 32 countries to vote on this year’s contenders. Jury members had to whittle down a list of 30 new cars to select this year’s COTY finalists and winner, which will receive trophies created by automotive designer Ian Callum.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 will go on sale in the US this spring. Depending on the motor and battery configuration, the EV gives customers between 270 and 361 miles of range. The Hyundai makes 225 hp with the single-motor setup and 320 hp with the dual-motor one.

BMW X1, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Kia Niro Are 2023 World Car of the Year Finalists

    [ad_1]

The finalists for the 2023 World Car Awards are here, and there are lots of EVs on this year’s list of potential winners. The organization announces the winners on Wednesday, April 5, at the New York International Auto Show.

The finalists in each category are:

    World Car of the Year

    World Electric Vehicle

    World Luxury Car

    World Performance Car

    World Urban Car

    • Citroen C3
    • ORA Funky Cat / Haomao
    • Volkswagen Taigo/Nivus

    World Car Design

With nominations in three of the six categories, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Lucid Air are up for the most potential awards this year. The BMW i7 is competing in two of the divisions.

The jury for the awards consists of 100 automotive journalists from 32 countries. They vote by secret ballot.

This year, there’s a new look for the World Car trophy. Ian Callum’s design firm Callum created the design, and they decided the best way to make it was 3D printing. “Reimagining both the design and manufacture is a huge privilege and just the opportunity the team at Callum relish,” Ian Callum said.

The World Car Awards jury already selected its World Car Person of the Year. The voters selected SangYup Lee for the honor. He’s the head of the Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center.

Last year, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 won the World Car of the Year honor to beat out the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Kia EV6. It also won the World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design categories.

The Audi E-Tron GT was the World Performance Car last year. The Mercedes-Benz EQS was World Luxury Car, and the Toyota Yaris Cross was World Urban Car.

  • Kia Niro Wins Women’s World Car Of The Year Award For 2023

Kia Niro Wins Women’s World Car Of The Year Award For 2023

    [ad_1]

The Women’s World Car of the Year for 2023 is the Kia Niro. Sixty-three motoring journalists from 43 countries participated in this year’s contest, testing 59 candidates. The awards group announced the Niro as the winner on International Women’s Day.

The journalists picked the best car in six categories, announcing those winners last month and choosing from them the World’s Best Car for 2023. The Niro was competing against the Audi RS3, Citroen C5 X, Ford Ranger, Jeep Avenger, and Nissan X-Trail. Each was the winner of a specific category.

“This year’s election was particularly difficult due to the excellent level of all the candidates,” said Marta Garcia, WWCOTY’s executive president. “Each of the finalists had sufficient merit to win the trophy.”

US journalist Elana Scherr said the Niro “delivers a complete package,” while Belgium’s Sabrina Parant called it a car that “continues to impress me.” Renuka Kirpalani, from India, said the Niro was a “practical little city car that gives you everything you need in an affordable package.”

Kia first unveiled the new Niro in late 2021, showing off the crossover’s new design. However, it wouldn’t be until April 2022 that we learned the details of the US-bound version. The Niro took a lot of design inspiration from the 2019 Habaniro concept, arriving in the US with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.

The crossover is larger than the one it replaced, providing more passenger and cargo space. The cabin also got a major makeover. The dashboard now accommodates a dual-screen setup with all the bells and whistles customers want today, like ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charging, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and more available.

Last year, 56 women journalists from 40 countries selected the Peugeot 308 as 2022’s Women’s Car of the Year award. The pool had 65 candidates.

  • Ferrari Purosangue Crowned Motor1.com Global Social Car Of The Year

Ferrari Purosangue Crowned Motor1.com Global Social Car Of The Year

    [ad_1]

Through the month of February, Motor1.com embarked on a social media challenge that was shared by our editions around the world. Each region picked winners in several categories, but now we have the final tally of overall votes from every car in every edition. Taking the overall crown for the #Motor1socialcar23 contest is the Ferrari Purosangue.

Ferrari’s first SUV captured a convincing win, but it wasn’t a blowout victory. Not far behind in second place was the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The Alfa Romeo Tonale finished in the third spot, with the BMW iX1 and Ferrari 296 GTS rounding out the top five with a very close battle.

This is the sum of social media votes recorded from no less than eight Motor1.com editions. During the five weeks of the social media challenge, 1.5 million users were reached, logging 120,000 video views and over 190,000 votes. By the time all the smoke had cleared, we achieved a potential reach of 1.2 billion users. And through all that, the Ferrari Purosange came out on top.

For our Motor1.com US social media followers, here’s a recap of the category winners:

Week #1: Best Urban & Compact – Acura Integra

Week #2: Best Truck & Van – Ford Bronco Raptor

Week #3: Best Supercar & Sports Car – Bugatti Mistral Roadster

Week #4: Best Luxury – Bentley Batur

    Week #5: Best EV – BMW i4 M50

As for the global champion, the Ferrari Purosange is the first SUV to ever wear a Prancing Horse badge. Despite having four seats and four doors, it still packs a proper Italian punch with a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 providing 715 horsepower and 528 pound-feet of torque. It has a redline of 8,250 rpm, but the engine still generates a majority of its torque at a low 2,100 revs. Power goes to the ground through an eight-speed gearbox, and when traction permits, the Pursangue reaches 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

We thank all our Motor1.com fans and social media followers for participating in this year’s Social Car of the Year challenge. Your voice has been heard! • Only 48 Models Earn 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick Award Due To New Regs

Only 48 Models Earn 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick Award Due To New Regs

    [ad_1]

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released its initial list of Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick winners for the 2023 model year. This time, there are 48 awarded vehicles, which is significantly less than the 101 for 2022 models. This difference is largely due to the IIHS requiring better side-impact protection, improved crash-prevention tech, and better illuminating headlights to be eligible for the honors.

Of the 48 winners, 28 received the Top Safety Pick+ award and 20 got the Top Safety Pick honor. In contrast, 65 models scored the TSP+ last year and 36 won the TSP accolade last year.

“The number of winners is smaller this year because we’re challenging automakers to build on the safety gains they’ve already achieved,” said IIHS President David Harkey. “These models are true standouts in both crashworthiness and crash prevention.”

The Toyota Motor Corp’s combination of the Toyota and Lexus brands scored the most awards for 2023. It had nine models with a Top Safety Pick+ and six earning a Top Safety Pick. In 2022, Hyundai led the pack with 11 TSP+ honors and 10 TSP trophies

For the 2024 model year, the IIHS will no longer conduct the roof strength, head restraint, and vehicle-to-vehicle front-crash prevention system tests. The current state of the industry means that nearly every model receives Good scores in these evaluations. The organization is working on more challenging examinations to assess these features in the future.

Eliminating some tests won’t make getting an IIHS award any easier for 2024 vehicles. A Good, rather than Good or Acceptable, score on the side-impact test will be necessary to earn either honor. For the updated moderate-overlap front test, a Good or Acceptable rating will be a requirement of the Top Safety Pick+ winner. The revised evaluation will mean there will now be a crash dummy in the second row, and the agency will check it for injuries with sensors.

  • Mercedes EQE Performs Better Than EQS In Moose Test

Mercedes EQE Performs Better Than EQS In Moose Test

    [ad_1]

Electric vehicles generally perform well in moose tests. Not only because of their low center of gravity but also because of the slew of driving aids they generally possess. Then again, that isn’t always the case with our colleagues from km77.com, who routinely test vehicles to do the dreaded safety maneuver.

In the video, the subject of the moose test was the Mercedes EQE, which is the smaller electric sedan in the automaker’s EQ range. It’s like the smaller version of the EQS, so the testers were expecting a similar performance from the EQE in the moose test.

The Mercedes EQE performed well on the moose test, even better than the EQS. According to the tester, its ESC acted very discreetly and did not significantly reduce the forward speed of the car. The EV moved between the cones in an exemplary manner, very neutral, and with contained and accurate body movements. The car showed that it has a more immediate, sharper touch, making it easier to maneuver compared to the EQS.

The fastest speed that the EQE could muster to safely evade the cones was 45.9 miles per hour (74 kilometers per hour). The EQS needed to slow down a bit for a clean maneuver, tallying a speed of 44.7 mph (72 km/h). Of note, the benchmark of the test is 47.8 mph (77 km/h). The EQE was just a tad short of reaching the said magic number.

As mentioned, electric vehicles mostly fare well in moose tests. Even plugin hybrids record exemplary results when doing the evasive safety maneuver. Both the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 completed the same course with flying colors, while others like the BMW i4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E came up short of successfully hitting the benchmark speed.

At the start of the video above, the Mercedes EQE also performed well in the slalom test, with relatively agile support changes, small body roll, and well-calibrated electronic aids that did not intervene abruptly.

  • Porsche To Launch All-Electric Cayenne SUV In 2026: Report

Porsche To Launch All-Electric Cayenne SUV In 2026: Report

    [ad_1]

With a grand total of 95,604 units delivered in 2022, the Cayenne was Porsche’s most popular product. As shown in the adjacent teaser images, an updated version of the large luxury SUV has already been previewed prior to a world premiere scheduled to take place in April. The current-gen model has been around since 2017 but rather than switching to the next generation, it’ll get a comprehensive facelift and remain on sale for many years to come.

Meanwhile, rumor has it the peeps from Zuffenhausen are also working on an all-electric version scheduled to come out in 2026. Other than the name, it won’t have much else in common with today’s SUV since it’ll ride on a different platform. Autocar has it on good authority Porsche is plotting a Cayenne EV on the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) underpinnings planned for the next-gen, electric-only Macan. The architecture is being developed in collaboration with Audi, which will use it initially for a Q6 E-Tron and an A6 E-Tron.

If the 2026 launch date is accurate, it means the Cayenne EV (name not official) will be released after the Macan EV but before a larger, three-row electric SUV that has already been officially announced. Expect a lot of power considering the smaller electric crossover will be offered with as much as 603 horsepower (450 kilowatts) and more than 738 pound-feet (1,000 Newton-meters) of torque for the flagship version. It might also receive a battery larger than the 100-kWh pack earmarked for the zero-emission Macan.

Courtesy of 800V tech, the Porsche Cayenne without a combustion engine will support fast charging at over 270 kW. The range is not known for the time being, but an educated guess tells us the engineers are targeting at least 300 miles (482 kilometers) in the EPA cycle to compete with the Mercedes EQS SUV. Rear-wheel steering is likely planned since the Macan EV will have it, along with an already confirmed electronically controlled rear axle differential lock.

Much like it’ll be the case with the Macan-badged SUVs, the ICE-powered Cayenne will be sold alongside the EV model for a number of years before Porsche will pull the plug on combustion engines. That won’t be the case with the 718 lineup as the Boxster and Spyder will go electric-only when the next generation arrives in 2025.

  • Nissan Claims Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Fuel Economy Estimates Are Unrealistic

Nissan Claims Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Fuel Economy Estimates Are Unrealistic

    [ad_1]

Automakers are not above taking shots at each other for performance claims like real-world fuel economy. Most recently, Nissan took aim at Toyota’s RAV4 hybrid indicating the fuel economy ratings on the popular small SUV are exaggerated.

Case in point, the Nissan X-Trail e-Power uses a gasoline engine to recharge the onboard lithium-ion battery and gets an estimated 6.1 liters per 100km, or about 38.6 mpg. By comparison, the Toyota RAV4 uses a conventional hybrid system that delivers an estimated 4.7 liters per 100 km, or the equivalent of 50 mpg, a fuel economy increase of about 30 percent.

Nissan indicates that the fuel economy differences between the two vehicles are not as far apart as the estimates suggest and believe the real-world performance is closer. “I think with the fuel economy, it’s a tricky one. We’ll leave it in your hands to do the real-world testing. But from a lot of the articles I’ve seen for RAV4 Hybrid, you can’t get anywhere near 4.8 (liters per hundred kilometers),” says Aleksandar Pecanac, Nissan Australia’s product manager for X-Trail.

Nissan goes on to claim that its X-Trail e-Power system delivers a superior driving experience. According to Adam Robertson, deputy director of the Nissan Technical Center in Europe, the X-Trail drives “More like an EV, and we know from our experience with EVs that customers love it.”

Robertson goes on to say, “EVs have the highest level of satisfaction for acceleration, and that’s not just the outright performance for a car like the Porsche Taycan. That’s all EVs. “We also know that traditional hybrids have the lowest satisfaction. We wanted to capture the customer experience that they really like and bring that in with e-Power.”

The Nissan X-Trail e-Power launched last fall in Japan and Europe as an electrified version of the Rogue. The automaker has not yet indicated if and when it will bring the e-Power version of the Nissan Rogue to the US. Currently, Nissan’s US website only mentions the e-Power on the Nissan Leaf
